What to Plant This Month-
August |
|
|
| August is generally an awful time to plant because
it's...too...friggin'...hot. For landscape plants, it's better to wait
until fall. Fall is considered by many to be the best time of year for
planting. There are some exceptions, listed below. |
| |
- Autumn-blooming bulbs:
like
Autumn-flowring crocus, meadow saffron (Colchicum autumnale), and spider
lilies (lycoris).
|
- Certain vegetables: From seed, you can now plant:
broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, spinach and more. See the Vegetable Planting Calendar for the complete list.
|
- Perennials & annuals: While not the ideal planting
time, plenty of summer-blooming annuals and perennials are available in
nurseries now. Check SacGardening.com
events calendar for plant sales, like Bob Hamm's AIDS
Benefit Plant Sales. Looking for a Sacramento source for Annie's rare,
heirloom and unusual annuals and perennials? Bushnell's, Redwood Barn,
Sierra Nursery & Rock and the Davis Food Co-op carry Annie's
plants.
